Dél?ne and CPAWS-NWT—2009 Parks and Environmental Leadership Award Recipient
Dél?ne and the Northwest Territories Chapter of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS-NWT) were awarded the NWTRPA’s Parks and Environmental Leadership Award last year for their protection efforts that helped create Canada’s largest National Historic Site, Saoyu-?ehdacho.
Saoyú - ?ehdacho are two major peninsulas on the west side of Great Bear Lake, totalling over 5,500km2. Protection efforts began in the late 1990s and resulted in permanent protection in 2009. The decade-long partnership between Dél?ne and CPAWS-NWT represented strong leadership, dedication, and perseverance to ensure that Saoyu-?ehdacho would be enjoyed for future generations.

The Parks and Environmental Leadership Award recognizes demonstrated positive leadership through the development or promotion of trails, parks or green-spaces as well as the areas of outdoor or environmental education, research or advocacy. This is one of six awards that the NWTRPA awards annually.
