Dél?ne and CPAWS-NWT—2009 Parks and Environmental Leadership Award Recipient

Dél?ne and the Northwest Territories Chapter of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS-NWT) were awarded the NWTRPA’s Parks and Environmental Leadership Award last year for their protection efforts that helped create Canada’s largest National Historic Site, Saoyu-?ehdacho.

Saoyú - ?ehdacho are two major peninsulas on the west side of Great Bear Lake, totalling over 5,500km².  Protection efforts began in the late 1990s and resulted in permanent protection in 2009. The decade-long partnership between Dél?ne and CPAWS-NWT represented strong leadership, dedication, and perseverance to ensure that Saoyu-?ehdacho would be enjoyed for future generations.

The Parks and Environmental Leadership Award recognizes demonstrated positive leadership through the development or promotion of trails, parks or green-spaces as well as the areas of outdoor or environmental education, research or advocacy.  This is one of six awards that the NWTRPA awards annually.
