Nordic Walking support program includes training, poles on loan and support to start a community Nordic walking group.

Elders in Motion support program includes funding up to $2000, training and support to run an Elders exercise program.

This Paddle Canada course is designed help participants develop paddling and teaching skills to a point where they can teach and certify others in flat water canoe skills.

When: May 25, 26 and 27.

Where: Yellowknife, NT.

Prerequisites: First Aid with CPR is needed for this certification.  You can get the first aid cert. after you take the canoe course if you wish.  Intermediate paddling skills are needed for this course.

Certification: Paddle Canada Flat Water Tandem Canoe Skills Instructor.

What to expect: This is an experiential course.  Participants will need to dress for the weather. Paddle strokes will be taught in open water close to Yellowknife.  All canoe rescue skills will be taught in the Yellowknife Pool.

Cost: $100 + GST

The NWTRPA is hosting a Canoe Tripping Instructor Course

Instructor Trainer: Priscilla Haskin. (www.haskincanoe.ca)

The tripping program is designed to allow individuals the opportunity to develop skills that will enable them to lead canoe trips beyond a 1 day paddle.

When: June 1^st to 4^th.

Where: Hay River, NT.  (Canoe trip from Enterprise to Hay River)

Prerequisites: Participants need to have a flat or moving water canoe instructor certification to participate. (above mentioned instructor courses will be held in Yellowknife in May if interested) First Aid with CPR is also required for the certification but can be obtained following this course

Certification: Paddle Canada Canoe Tripping Instructor Level 1

What to expect: This is an experiential course.  Participants must be prepared to camp outdoors and participate in a 2 night, 3 day canoe trip.  Participants will be responsible for 2-3 meals for the group (of 5 or more individuals).

Cost: $350 +GST + food.

Hockey Canada is currently working once again with Mars Canada to identify community arenas in need of renovation.  Last season Mars targeted a single community in New Brunswick and made a tremendous impact on the facility and the community.  After a successful first year they have decided to continue on with this initiative.

Shallow Water Pool Certification Course

June 4th – 8th, 2012 in Inuvik

The Shallow Water Pool Certification will provide an Aquatic Emergency Care (AEC) certification and provide training on how to be a lifeguard in a class ‘A’ pool (prefabricated pool erected entirely above ground for seasonal operation).

Pre-requisites

• 16 years of age or older
• Literacy skills – (50% of course in classroom)
• Basic swimming skills – able to keep your face in the water for 20seconds
• An interest in working at a Class ‘A’ Pool in the future

On Friday, May 4, 2012, the NWT Recreation and Parks Association, in partnership with the GNWT Department of Municipal and Community Affairs and First Air announced the winners of the 2012 Get Active NWT flight draw.

Each year the Get Active NWT program encourages NWT residents to apply for funding to help community members get out and get active. Those who apply for Get Activ

e NWT grants can receive $750 to organize and deliver three community oriented physical activity events.

First Air, as a corporate sponsor, helps recognize the important role Get Active NWT participants and organizers play in promoting healthy physical activity in our communities by donating flight vouchers for the flight draw. Event organizers who send in their post-event reports have their names entered into a draw to win a flight for two from First Air.

Violet Beaulieu is an extremely active 79 year old.  Not only was she a very dedicated member of the Fort Res Nordic Walkers, she also attends exercise video classes twice per week.  All of this activity helps her maintain the energy to assist in raising her great grandson.  Carol Ann Chaplin, the Community Coordinator in Fort Resolution says “One of the most impressive things about Violet is her stamina, she was able to keep up with people half her age for the whole hour that we would go as a group and sometimes even finish before them.”
